I will be putting some information here on my special interest - Record woodworking tools from that were produced in the days of C & J Hampton Ltd which was founded in Sheffield in 1898 by the two brothers Charles and Joseph Hampton.  I'm going to put a lot more effort into this over the next few weeks so I hope it will eventually become a real site of reference.  Its quite a bit of work so if this looks incomplete for a while please bear with me - I will put up photographs of everything I can get my hands on too.

In looking for Record tools to study I do have spares available from time to time so please do email me if there is anything you are looking for - I may be able to find it for you. Also if you have any woodworking tools for sale let me know as I am always looking for good quality tools.

Planes, Spokeshaves. Hand Drills, Braces

C & J Hampton Ltd started to produce woodworking tools in 1931 to compete with the expanding range from Stanley.  The range of planes produced until the second world war was quite extensive, in fact the greatest of any British manufacturer  and they were for the most part copies of Stanley planes available at the time.  While most were copies of Stanley tools some were copies of Preston designs which Record took over after that firms demise in 1932.  One or two designs were unique to Record such as the #712, #713 and #714.     For the most part Record used the same numbering system as Stanley but with a 0 in front of the number.  The quality of the Record planes was excellent - equilvalent of the prewar Stanley's and this quality was maintained into the mid 1950's the decline started.

This is a list of what was available in the 1930's.  Click on a picture or number for a larger view and further information

Bench Planes

Standard SS (Stay Set) Length Blade Width Weight Description
02 02SS 1-5/8" 2-1/4 pounds The Record 02 was a copy of the Stanley #2 but was improved because of the much better frog design.  The frog was of similar construction to the other planes in the range being similar to the Stanley type 11-15.  A very rare plane that is rarely seen.  Only available pre-war.  It was also available in corrugated versions (extremely rare).
03 03SS 8" 1-3/4" 3-1/4 pounds Smoother, copy of the Stanley #3
04 04SS 10" 2" Very common smoother of excellent quality.
04-1/2 04-1/2SS 14" 2-3/8" Wide smoother
05 05SS 14" 2" Jack plane

06 06SS 18" 2" Fore Plane.  A very useful plane as the leght of a #7 or #8 is not always needed.
07 07SS 22" 2-3/8" Jointer plane
08 08SS 24" 2-5/8" 24" long the biggest Bench plane with a fantastic weight and presence in the hand.  Planing with this is quite an experience.
