Epiphytes is published
quarterly by the Epiphytic Plant Study Group (EPSG) and is of particular
interest to enthusiasts of the
epiphytic cacti, such as Schlumbergeras (Christmas cacti or Thanksgiving
cacti) and epicacti (Epiphyllums or Orchid Cacti), as well as many
of the other lesser known epiphytic cacti. Other epiphytic plant
groups such as bromeliads, orchids and gesneriads are also covered from time to
time.
The Epiphytic Plant Study Group originated from a group of people in the UK National Cactus and Succulent Society in the 1960's. The original Epiphytes ran for four volumes under the editorship of A.J.S. McMillan, before ceasing publication in the early 1970's. Publication was restarted in 1981 under the editorship of John Horobin, with Chris Dawson as subscription secretary and Epiphytes has been published since then. Although the publication is UK based, over half the membership is now from overseas. Back issues and article reprints are available on request from the editor.
The aim of the group is basically to increase the interest and awareness of this very attractive group of plants, which also make excellent houseplants. Another important aim of the group is to try to maintain as many of the species and cultivars in cultivation as possible and also breed new and exciting cultivars for future enjoyment.
We welcome contributions to the journal, whether articles, letters or notes. Please contact the editor for details. We hope to have some interesting articles on this site shortly, the first is "The Queen Story" . Dolly Kölli has also send us some more information on her hybrids - click here.
Another project which is under way is an online registration database for schlumbergera hybrids. More soon.
